AO: Aga into 2nd round
2014 and 2016 semi-finalist Agnieszka edged past Tsvetana Pironkova in three sets to book a place in the second round of the Australian Open on Tuesday.
Seeded no.3 at the first Grand Slam event of the season, the Pole notched a 6-1, 4-6, 6-1 victory in one hour and 44 minutes.
The match featured 12 breaks of serve, eight made by Aga and four by the Bulgarian.
The first and third sets were plain sailing for the Krakow native. She fought back from a break deficit twice in the second set, but Pironkova eventually sealed it to level the contest. Agnieszka produced her best tennis when it mattered most and improved her career record with Pironkova to 10-3.
Stats: aces (2-3), double faults (0-5), winners (28-22), unforced errors (21-32), total points won (79-57).
Her next opponent will be world no.79 Mirjana Lucic-Baroni (2-0 H2H), who moved into the second round with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 win over Qiang Wang of China.
