Agnieszka dodges Ruse upset bid in Wimbledon epic
No.32 seed Agnieszka was forced to fight hard for win against former top 10 junior Elena-Gabriela Ruse (WTA #195) on Monday, as she kicked off her Wimbledon campaign with a three sets victory 6-3, 4-6, 7-5.
Aga and Ruse split the first two sets of the two hour, 40-minute contest. They traded break once at the beginning of the deciding third set, before the 20-year-old Romanian missed six match points in the 10th game on Agnieszka's serve. The Pole withstood the challenge and held, then broke her rival and served it out to progress into the second round.
Stats: aces (4-1), double faults (1-11), total points won (125-111).
Up next, Aga will take on former world no.5 Lucie Safarova (H2H 1-4). The Czech outplayed Kateryna Bondarenko 6-4, 6-4 earlier in the day.
