Sabalenka downs Aga to reach final
2008 titlist Agnieszka suffered a 3-6, 6-1, 3-6 defeat to 20-year-old Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka at the Nature Valley International on Friday.
Neither player was able to hold serve in the first six games of the match. Aga was up a break three times, but Sabalenka fought back each time and made a crucial break in the eighth game, then served it out to love.
The Pole responded by taking the second set and broke in the fifth game of the deciding third, but could not keep the high rhythm til the end. Sabalenka made two more breaks and moved into her first Premier-level final.
Agnieszka next heads to Wimbledon, the third Grand Slam event of the season, taking place in London, from July 2-14.
No.32 seed will open her campaign against Romanian qualifier Elena-Gabriela Ruse (WTA #197). It will be their first career meeting.
The Krakow native faces the prospect of a third round clash with no.2 seed Caroline Wozniacki.
It will be Aga's 13th appearance at the All England Club. Last year she lost to Svetlana Kuznetsova in R4, 2-6, 4-6. Agnieszka's best result at The Championships is runner-up finish in 2012.
